Sunny Days Hostel in Arica, Chile

Arica is the gateway to Chile… …no wait, the gateway to Peru! Or is it Bolivia? If you visit this northernmost Chilean city, chances are you are crossing Chile to/from Peru or Bolivia.  The Sunny Days Hostel in Arica is in a very convenient location to do just that, a short walk from the national and the international bus station.

But there is more to Arica than just being a transit layover. As the hostel name suggest, it almost never rains in Arica. On the other hand, it doesn’t get too hot in the “city of eternal spring”, even though it is situated at the edge of the Desierto de Atacama. Add 20km of beaches and nice waves and you’ve got yourself a surfer’s paradise.

No matter if you want to stay a night to catch the bus next morning or stay a month to catch the famous wave “El Gringo” each morning, Sunny Days Hostel welcomes you. Or rather Ross from New Zealand, the owner and host, welcomes you with a smile, a joke and a free all you can eat breakfast to his living room. Or is it the hostel’s living room? The distinction is blurred and doesn’t matter.

The living room

Spacious doesn’t cut it as a description for this living room and the huge communal area with public kitchen in the second house next door or the second fully equipped kitchen on the top floor or the rooftop terrace or the rooms themselves. Bring an elephant or two, if you like. They will hardly register.

Sunny Days Hostel owner Ross is a wealth of information about things to do in and around Arica, having lived here for 12 years. He can also provide you with information about the nearby Parque Nacional Lauca. If you can’t make it all the way down south to Patagonia, Parque Lauca is supposed to be the next best thing for outdoor lovers visiting Chile.

House Of Colors Hostel in Pucon, Chile

Pucon is a beautiful little city on the shore of the Lago Villarica in southern Chile, 780km south of Santiago. It’s on of the major tourist destinations during chilenian summer holidays. With the long beautiful beach, plenty of outdoor activities, great nightlife and the perfect shade of the Volcan Villarrica in the background it is easy to figure out why.  House of Colors Hostel is a great option for exploring the region.

John and Bernny of house of colors hostel

Opened in November 2012, House of Colors Hostel is a great new option in town. It is perfectly located in the center of Pucon with a breathtaking view of the volcano. Bars and restaurants are reachable within seconds; the huge supermarket is three minutes away and the beach is only a five-minute walk away.

The hostel is run by John, who started traveling at the age of 17, and his sister Bernanda (Bernny) who has worked in the tourist sector all her life. You will hardly find a better combination to run House of Colors Hostel. Most important to them is that travelers share the community and get together instead of hanging around lonely. That’s why they organize BBQ-events in the hostel’s inner courtyard. When it fills with lively travelers from all over the world you don’t mind that not everything in House of Colors Hostel is perfectly finished yet.

Hostal Donde German 2 in Pucon, Chile

Pucon is a city in the great outdoors of Chile. Like at every place where nature is the main draw, you always hope for good weather!  That said, there is probably no better place in Pocun to be stuck on a rainy day than Hostal Donde German.

Hostal Donde German 2

The hostel is managed by the always smiling German. He speaks some English and runs a new and very modern place. It’s certainly not uncomfortably modern, however. Lots of homey wood furnishings make you feel super cozy. The hostel is unbelievably clean, especially the huge kitchen. Here, you can find everything you could think of for your cooking needs along with free coffee and tea.

But you don’t want to drink that coffee or tea in the kitchen. You want to hit the comfy living room with a big fireplace which makes you never wanna leave, especially if the weather isn’t that great. The furthest you would want to go is 5 meters away to the TV corner. But don’t get lost on the way; this place is really spacious!

Hostal donde German isn’t only a great place to spend a rainy day. It’s an even better place to spend a sunny day. Stroll around the garden, stock up on some sunshine on the sunloungers or dip into the swimming pool.

Of course, if you want to get out on the lake, into the national park or go see the Villarica Volcano up close, just ask knowledgeable German. Or let him organize you a tour in his tour agency. Or just rent a bike to get out even if it’s only so you can look forward to coming back to your hostel.
